Alignment of the CMS tracker with LHC and cosmic ray data

چکیده
The central component of the CMS detector is the largest silicon tracker ever built. The precise alignment of this complex device is a formidable challenge, and only achievable with a significant extension of the technologies routinely used for tracking detectors in the past. This article describes the full-scale alignment procedure as it is used during LHC operations. Among the specific features of the method are the simultaneous determination of up to 200 000 alignment parameters with tracks, the measurement of individual sensor curvature parameters, the control of systematic misalignment effects, and the implementation of the whole procedure in a multiprocessor environment for high execution speed. Overall, the achieved statistical accuracy on the module alignment is found to be significantly better than 10 μm. First Alignment of the CMS Tracker and Implications for the First Collision Data
We present the first results of the full CMS Silicon Tracker alignment based on several million reconstructed tracks from the cosmic data taken during the commissioning runs with the detector in its final position. Implication for CMS physics performance is discussed. The all-silicon design of the tracking system of the CMS experiment is expected to provide 1−2% resolution for 100 GeV tracks an...
متن کاملAlignment of the CMS Silicon Strip Tracker during stand - alone
The results of the CMS tracker alignment analysis are presented using the data from cosmic tracks, optical survey information, and the laser alignment system at the Tracker Integration Facility at CERN. During several months of operation in the spring and summer of 2007, about five million cosmic track events were collected with a partially active CMS Tracker. This allowed us to perform first a...
متن کاملTrack Reconstruction and Alignment with the Cms Silicon Tracker
This report presents recent results on track reconstruction and alignment with the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment at the LHC, obtained with a full detector simulation. After an overview of the layout of the tracker and its material budget, the baseline algorithm for track reconstruction is discussed. The performance of the track reconstruction and its dependence on misalignment is shown....
متن کاملAlignment of the Cosmic Rack with the Hits and Impact Points Algorithm
We present first results of a track based alignment procedure applied to test beam data recorded with Cosmic Rack, a test setup which mimicks the outer barrel of the CMS Tracker. The Hits and Impact Points alignment method is used within the CMS reconstruction software framework to align this telescope-like device. These results were compared to results obtained with manual alignment and to res...
متن کاملCommissioning the CMS trigger with cosmic rays
The CMS experiment has collected about 300 million cosmic ray events. This has provided an excellent opportunity to test the trigger and prepare for the LHC collision data. This paper describes some of the L1 trigger studies we performed with these events.
